After the wedding of Prince Harry and Megan Markle, it is evident that the royal family is ready to welcome modern ideals and put aside old traditions.  

Megan Markle is and African-American divorced actress from Los Angeles, California- one of the least likely candidates for marriage into the family. The royal family has many regulations when it comes to marriage, such as: no divorcees, no Muslims, no Jewish people, no Buddhists, or no atheists. Although these rules are not set in stone, the Queen or King can declare a marriage invalid for these reasons. The rules seem ridiculous to some, however, according to Good Housekeeping, Queen Elizabeth II didn’t allow Prince Charles to marry Camilla back in 1971, so he marry Diana instead.  

Not only does the royal family restrict “inappropriate” marriages, they also don’t have much power in the United Kingdom anymore. Over the years, the British Parliament has taken over control, as many believe they are more qualified to run a government than some of the royals. This obvious lack of power in the royal family confuses many on why they are still around and celebrated today. The reason is that in England, and all around the world, the family serves as a symbol of tradition and liberty, according to The Telegraph. Therefore, the royal events, from affairs to births to weddings, are broadcasted across the globe.  

Despite these negative aspects of the royal family, the recent marriage of Prince Harry and Megan Markle has elated people everywhere. Not only are people of color thrilled by the marriage, as it gives them hope and recognition, but diverse peoples in all different countries. The fact that Megan is a divorcee, an African-American, and an actress, labels her as an uncommon fiancé of a royal prince. However, it also labels her as the spark that will set fire to the inhumane traditions of the royal family.  

Many people have high expectations for the royal wedding, as Prince Harry and Megan Markle are both philanthropists. They plan to use their influence to give back to third world countries and other people in need. For example, according to The Telegraph, the bride and groom did not ask for wedding gifts, but for donations to one of seven charities. These included: The Children’s HIV Association, Crisis (U.K.’s homeless), The Myna Mahila Foundation, Scotty’s Little Soldiers, StreetGames, Surfers Against Sewage, and The Wilderness Foundation UK. These organizations combine Prince Harry’s and Megan’s passions, giving people many options to donate to.  

Therefore, the royal family may not have much power anymore, however, the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Megan Markle will prove to make a difference in the world. The wedding marks a new day and age, a one where equality is more prevalent and practiced.
